POLITICS, STRATEGIES AND INSTRUMENTS FOR LATIN AMERICA AND CARIBBEAN

The convergence of the effects of urbanization and climate change are posing both challenges and opportunities for society in the 21st century. The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) and the U.N. Economic Commission for Latin America and Caribbean (ECLAC) sought to contribute to building local responses to climate change in urban areas of Latin America & Caribbean. Co-sponsors were the Spanish Government and the project “Urbanization and Global Environment Change” (UGEC) of the “International Human Dimensions Program on Global Environmental Change” (IHDP). This training workshop was an effort to assist urban planners, decision-makers, and stakeholders to prepare better responses to climate change. Its main objective was to expand the knowledge and understanding of how urban areas are driving but also responded to climate change and integrate those responses with their current and future urban development. These responses were fundamental to guide short and long-term socioeconomic and urban development coherent with the sustainability of the region.

The training institute had three interactive components: lectures, discussion sessions, and exercises. The lectures allowed participants to interact with leading international experts on the topics of the workshop. A discussion session took place at the end of each thematic module. These sessions were designed to assist participants to integrate the different elements presented in the lectures and related that knowledge to the information presented in previous thematic modules. The exercises provided participants with the opportunity to apply the knowledge and information obtained at the training workshop to their daily work and area of expertise.

Guidelines for participant´s presentation (in spanish only)

Cada participante deberá traer consigo al curso información sobre su ciudad. Esa información será usada para la elaboración de su presentación durante los últimos dos días del taller.

La información sobre su ciudad puede cubrir los siguientes aspectos:

Información urbana (infraestructura, servicios urbanos, transporte, usos del suelo, áreas verdes, topografía, fuentes de abasto de agua, etc.)
Información climática Emergencias ambientales vinculadas al clima (inundaciones, deslaves, erosión, ondas de calor, etc.), la frecuencia con que ocurren esos eventos y sus consecuencias para la ciudad (zonas y grupos sociales afectados, tipo de daños, respuestas a esos daños)
Información social demográfica y económica del área urbana y Salud pública

Los participantes tienen la opción de basar su presentación en una visión general de su ciudad o un proyecto específico sobre mitigación (control de emisiones de gases de invernadero), reducción de la vulnerabilidad a eventos climáticos (inundaciones, deslaves, ondas de calor, etc.) o adaptación al cambio climático (servicios ambientales, salud, reducción de riesgos, economía urbana, agua, etc.).

Les solicitamos a los participantes con interés sobre un proyecto específico traer información más detallada sobre su caso de estudio.

Se recomienda traer la información en formato digital para facilitar su manejo durante el taller. Y tambien note book para poder trabajar en el hotel después de las clases en la presentación. La CEPAL puede facilitar algunos pocos computadores durante el dia, pero como vamos a tener clase durante todo el dia, los que tienen note book le facilitará la preparación de su presentación.
