The Training Institute was hosted by the School of Exact and Natural Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires (FCEN/UBA) in Argentina, in collaboration with the IAI and the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI).The Training Institute was funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) through the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). Co-sponsors were the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) and UNESCO´s International Hydrological Programme (PHI).

The Overall Objective of this training institute was to increase local and regional capacity on the use of seasonal prediction tailored to user needs in different socioeconomic sectors (agriculture, health, water resources, disaster risk reduction, etc) of Latin America. The course consisted of two weeks of lectures, seminars, discussions and practical exercises. Main topics were: 1) From global to regional seasonal predictions; 2) Translating science into applied knowledge to inform decision making; 3) Use of climate information: Experiences and needs in disaster risk reduction; in the agricultural, water management sector; and the health sector.

Thirty-eight participants from 13 Latin American countries attended the workshop. Some testimonies from participants, lecturers and speakers about the Training Institute are available at the article: Democratizing Seasonal Forecasting in Latin America (also available in spanish).

Logistical information for participants who are traveling to Buenos Aires under IAI travel support

The Training Institute was held at the School of Exact and Natural Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires.

Lecturers were given at "Aula Magna" located in the first floor of the "Pabellon I" of "Ciudad Universitaria".

Training activities (CPT hands on training) were given at "Laboratorio de Computacion" located at the upper-left corner of the ground floor of “Pabellon I”. An Ice-breaker Reception was held on Monday 2 August, 6pm, at the meeting room (sala de reuniones) of “Departamento de Ciencias de la Atmósfera y los Océanos”, located at the 2nd floor of “Pabellón 2”.

Local transportation

Local transportation has been arranged to take participants from Hotel Sarum to the training venue at the University of Buenos Aires. Departure time from the Hotel Sarum during the period of August 2-13 was at 08:15 am.
