Mariano Oyarzabal

Mariano has a Ph.D. in Agronomy (2007) from the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. He is currently a researcher at Laboratorio de Análisis Regional y Teledetección from the latest University. Mariano's research interests are concentrated on structure and functioning of grasslands, he´s been specially focused on controls and patterns of primary productivity at ecosystem level (Semmartin et al. 2007, see publications in his home page), but he also studied some patterns at plant community (Oesterheld & Oyarzabal 2004) and individual level (Oyarzabal et al. 2008, 2009). He has a background in grassland experimental ecology. For the last two years and until today, he´s been working with spatial information and remote sensing of land systems. Specifically, he´s working with a monitoring forage system based on MODIS to assist farmers' decisions (Grigera et al 2007, Agricultural Systems 94,637-648), which is also applied to protected areas (Oyarzabal etal. 2008). He thinks that it could be very useful to gain experience in remote sensing application to hydrology because he´s going to apply for a fellowships program to work with Dr. Albert Van Dijk´s team in 2010, whose main work area is Ecohydrology at regional and continental scales (http://www.csiro.au/people/Albert.VanDijk.html)
