Patrick Debels
Patrick Debels is an Environmental Engineer (M.Sc.) who graduated from Ghent University, Belgium, in 1995. He has been working in Latin-America since 1997, initially at the Centre for Environmental Sciences EULA-Chile of the University of Concepción (Chile) where his main activities focused on the use of GIS and mathematical models for studying hydrology, erosion and water quality. More recently, he has been leading the research efforts at EULA-Chile on the Biobío and Baker River Basins in the context of the EC-funded TWINBAS and TWINLATIN projects on integrated water resources management (2004-2009). Under TWINLATIN, he has also been assessing & supporting the project activities in different Latin-American partner basins, in particular the Cocibolca Lake Basin in Nicaragua, where he was stationed during the last 2 years. Currently Mr. Debels is associated to the engineering company SORESMA N.V. (Belgium) and the Centre for Water and Sustainable Development CADS of the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral ESPOL (Guayaquil, Ecuador) in the framework of the WETwin project (EC 7FP): “Enhancing the role of wetlands in integrated water resources managements in river basin from Europe, Africa and Latin-America”. As a consultant for the World Bank to the Nicaraguan and Bolivian Governments, he is currently also contributing to the Country Environmental Assessment Report for Nicaragua (management of the Cocibolca Lake Basin) and to the training of Bolivian experts in the field of climate change impacts and vulnerability (water resources sector).
