Research Internship Program on Understanding Climate Change and Variability in the Americas

Description

The Research Internship Program on Understanding Climate Change and Variability in the Americas is a joint innitiative developed by the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) and Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE) through the Center for Weather Forecast and Climate Studies (CPTEC). The program provides an opportunity for masters, PhD students, and young scientists to continue developing their research on global change and applications into socioeconomic sectors. Each student spends 6 (six) months developing a monitored research at CPTEC in Cachoeira Paulista, São Paulo, Brazil.

CPTEC is a Federal Government Instituition and has as the main task produce real time short and medium range forecast of weather and as well as other environmental condition (like the air quality), for Brazil and neighbor areas. CPTEC also provides climate sazonal prediction. To produce the forecast information, CPTEC uses several numerical atmospheric models for regional and global scales which run in supercomputers to process the time integration of the atmospheric state. CPTEC has also a operational division where meteorologists combine the numerical forecast, observational data and remote sensing information to provide the weather forecast on a daily basis.

Objectives

The internships are aimed at increasing research capacity on relevant global change themes of regional importance and promoting partnerships and multinational collaboration among Latin American researchers and institutions.

Tuition, support and facilities

The fellowship supports travel (round-trip airfare), travel and health insurance, visa fee, meals, miscellaneous and lodging. INPE/CPTEC facilitates training on climate models and climate data for interns to develop their research studies under the supervision of an appointed senior scientist. IAI seeks to involve interns in its research and capacity building programs to strengthen their training program and provide additional scientific capacity building.
